BIO: Anna E. Fowlkes
Anna E. Fowlkes is a HIV/AIDS prevention advocate, activist and spokesperson promoting HIV/AIDS education, awareness, testing and safer sex practices for all sexually active persons regardless of age. Ms. Fowlkes, a native of Baltimore, Maryland provides “buddy” support for newly infected HIV positive individuals, especially older adults. Over her career, she has worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital - Department of Psychiatry, the Internal Revenue Service and as a home health caretaker for close to two decades. Ms. Fowlkes is currently employed part-time as a Peer Navigator at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health.
At age 59, Ms. Fowlkes was diagnosed HIV positive. She has exhibited and presented at various conferences, summits, community organizations and faith-based groups throughout the Mid-Atlantic area. She served as a“Real People, Real Stories” panelist at the HIV/AIDS “After You Know, What Will You Do?” symposium hosted by Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings, in 2009. Ms. Fowlkes has accompanied the Congressman to many senior centers and housing units throughout Baltimore presenting her unique understanding of risk factors affecting older adults.
Ms. Fowlkes completed an HIV and Older Adults Training conducted by ACRIA (AIDS Community Research Initiative in America) HIV Health Literacy Program and the Center on HIV and Aging. She also completed the Taylor Wilks Group “Leadership, Empowerment, Advocacy and Participation” (LEAP-14) training where she received the CLEO award, the program’s highest honor. She received a Certificate of Completion from the National Quality Center's Training of Consumers on Quality.
She is a member of the Greater Baltimore HIV Health Services Planning Council which allocates Ryan White Part A funds for the Baltimore Eligible Metropolitan Area (EMA) and is a member of the Planning Council's Comprehensive Planning Committee, the Grantee's Health Literacy Panel, Maryland State HIV Planning Group, Places of Worship Advisory Board (POWAB), Chase Brexton's Patient Advisory Council (PAC), Older Women Embracing Life (O-WEL) and most recently was inducted into Sister Love's 2020 Leading Women's Society.
In October 2013, Anna E. Fowlkes was nominated and inducted as a member of SisterLove’s 20/20 Leading Women Society. The Society is a ten-year strategic effort to engage the leadership of long-term survivors of HIV/AIDS in creating and implementing an agenda that is based on the hindsight and foresight of 2,020 HIV positive women in 20 countries. The 2020 leaders are trained, mentored and compensated to address key barriers and stresses that prevent or inhibit women from actively engaging in managing their sexual and reproductive health, advocating for their human rights, and generating income that secures their independence and economic empowerment.
Ms. Fowlkes has creatively reached out to educate and promote HIV testing and safer sex practices as well as safe and healthy living. She wrote and performed in two videos: “Senior Dating - Older, Wiser, Safer” which deals with negotiating HIV testing and safer sex; and “Love Ain't Supposed to Hurt”which deals with physical abuse and HIV infection. Although both videos depict an older Afro-American woman, these videos address the issues of dating and abuse for all individuals regardless of age, sexual orientation and/or race. She has published several Examiner.com articles as a Baltimore HIV and AIDS Examiner, reporting on local HIV/AIDS events happening in and around Baltimore, Maryland.
